12,000 more reasons WA is ready to help

Press Release

St John WA is celebrating three key milestones on the State Defibrillator Network:

  • 12,000 Automated External Defibrillators registered
  • 10,000 AED locations
  • One third of locations – more than 3,400 – are publicly accessible

St John WA has reached a major milestone, registering more than 12,000 defibrillators (AEDs) across 10,000 locations — with more than one third of locations publicly accessible 24/7 — as part of the State Defibrillator Network.

From community halls to roadhouses, this network gives everyday people the chance to step in and save a life when every second counts.

AEDs are portable devices designed for anyone to treat people experiencing cardiac arrest until emergency services arrive.

With only one in 10 people surviving out-of-hospital cardiac arrests, defibrillators are key to saving lives.

WA’s State Defibrillator Network is one of the most comprehensive in the country — and it continues to grow thanks to the efforts of local volunteers, businesses, and the teams behind the scenes.

Community Response manager Caitlyn Pavey-Smith said the network relied on support and commitment from community members across the length and breadth of WA.

“We help run the network, but it only works because people and communities step up,” Ms Pavey-Smith said.

Locations of the milestone AEDs will be revealed on social media in coming weeks – but importantly both the 10,000th location and the 12,000th AED are in regional WA, making sure Western Australians can access help, wherever they are.
