Winners are grinners as St John WA awards volunteers of the year

Press Release

St John WA has recognised its finest volunteers at the organisation’s annual Experience award ceremony.

The event, which shone the spotlight on the dedicated army of volunteers who donate their time to their communities, was held on August 17, and as well as the awarding of the Country and Metro Volunteers of the Year, the event recognised those with 10-55 years of service with St John.

This year’s Country Volunteer of the Year was Wyalkatchem/Koorda’s Jay Hammond, whose commitment to his community is unwavering.

Across his roles of Chair, volunteer ambulance officer and Volunteer Development Officer he prioritises clear communication, clinical expertise and high-quality training. Jay has built robust relationships within the community and external agencies, including his involvement with local emergency management committees.

As a new, first-time parent, Jay excels in juggling many responsibilities.

His efforts have earned him commendations and the Wyalkatchem Community Citizen of the Year award.

Jay’s can-do attitude and approachability make him an exemplary role model for volunteers, new and existing alike.

The Metro Volunteer of the Year award was shared by husband and wife Alex and Nikki Gibson.

The dynamic duo were nominated for their inspirational generosity and willingness to help in many areas of Event Health Services and Youth & Community Engagement.

Nikki and Alex have left an indelible mark on St John WA through their extraordinary joint volunteer efforts.

In their volunteer support roles, they tirelessly contribute their time to their community, whether  it’s replenishing supplies, organising infrastructure, or tending the barbecue at divisional events, Alex and Nikki work in perfect harmony to ensure the smooth running of operations.

Their caring and joyful nature, along with their boundless generosity, have earned them universal love and respect from fellow volunteers.

It is impossible to separate their contributions, as their combined efforts create a shining example of unity, dedication and selflessness.

St John WA Group CEO Kevin Brown congratulated the three winners and paid tribute to their services.

“I am very proud to be part of an organisation with people of this calibre,” he said.

“It’s volunteers like Jay, Alex, and Nikki, who truly embody St John WA’s motto of “service to humanity.”
