Driving sustainability – Community Transport vehicles go hybrid
A significant step toward sustainability and innovation has been achieved with the introduction of hybrid vehicles into the Community Transport Service (CTS).
This pioneering move sees St John WA receiving new hybrid Kia Carnivals in February 2025, marking the first hybrid fleet dedicated to serving the WA public.
The Community Transport Service provides affordable, safe and reliable transport for people needing access to essential care.
It is a non-profit passenger service that exists to support those who cannot use mainstream public transport systems or their usual means of transportation. Hundreds of dedicated volunteers give their time to transport thousands of passengers to medical appointments.
The hybrid cars feature updated livery, showcasing a prominent hybrid emblem that highlights the organisation’s commitment to environmentally conscious practices.
This initiative is expected to reduce fuel consumption by approximately 40 per cent, while also enhancing comfort for both drivers and patients.
“The new hybrid vehicles will not only help reduce fuel costs but improve the travel experience for our patients,” Brody Munyard, General Manager Patient & Community Transport Services said.
Additionally, the Fleet and Radio Communications department has also welcomed a fully electric Kia EV5 as a pool vehicle for their support team, starting February 2025.
“These upgrades reflect the ongoing efforts to improve our services while reducing carbon footprint across WA,” Chief Emergency Officer Brendon Brodie-Hall said.
By embracing Environment, Social, People and Governance (ESPG) goals as part of the 2023–2026 Strategic Plan, these initiatives demonstrate a commitment to fostering sustainability and setting a benchmark for ethical and responsible healthcare practices.
CTS volunteers provide transport and companionship to members of our community who need it most, allowing them to maintain their independence and wellbeing. Find out more HERE.
