Volunteers shine as finalists in 2025 WA Volunteer of the Year awards

Press Release

Three St John WA volunteers, Brian Gallop, Bree Del Borrello and Nicole Kelly, are finalists in the 2025 WA Volunteer of the Year awards.

The awards are an annual celebration of Western Australia’s dedicated community of volunteers.

The winners will be announced at the Volunteering WA awards ceremony on May 13.

St John WA volunteer Brian Gallop accepting a local Citizen of the Year award

Brian Gallop is a finalist in the WA Volunteer of the Year category which celebrates ‘an individual who has made an exemplary voluntary contribution and has demonstrated a profound commitment to improving the lives of others through their volunteering efforts.’

Brian has been volunteering with St John WA across the Goldfields since 1998 and describes his work as an “absolute privilege.”

“I am fortunate enough that I can travel the entire state working alongside the most amazing bunch of people everywhere I go,” he said.

“Together as one big family, we change people’s lives every day which is an amazing thing.”

He has now committed almost 30 years of service to emergency response, volunteer training, community outreach and more.

St John WA volunteer Bree Del Borrello in Lancelin

Bree Del Borrello, 25, is a finalist in the Young Volunteer of the Year category.

A Ledge Point local, Bree volunteers as an Emergency Medical Technician at the Lancelin Sub Centre alongside her partner, Tyler, and mother-in-law, Tonya.

Bree has completed over 1000 hours since she took the plunge and joined the team three years ago.

The skills she is building from volunteering are setting her up for her future career – and building rapport within the Lancelin community.

“One day I want to work in my community as a registered nurse.

“I think these skills are vital to build that connection,” Bree said.

“If volunteering is something you’re thinking about, what’s stopping you? Just get into it. It’s the most rewarding thing someone can do.”

Tom Price volunteer and local deputy principal, Nicole Kelly, is also a finalist in the Lifetime Contribution to Volunteering category and was nominated by the Department of Fire and Emergency Services.
