Paramedic-led initiative to support the WA public
- A public information support guide, thought up by St John WA paramedics has been delivered to local stations and sub centres to better support the WA public.
- The resource includes crucial instructions and support resources for bystanders and loved ones after an emergency.
- The eight-page pocket guide and dedicated web page are now live and available in WA.
Patient and Bystander Support Guides have now been delivered to St John WA stations and sub centres to better support families and bystander after an emergency.
St John WA Paramedic Rachel Hutt said the guides were an idea she had after experiencing situations where she felt families and patients needed more information they could utilise in their time of need.
“This guide allows crews to provide essential numbers and consistent information to bystanders who have witnessed traumatic incidents in an easy and timely manner, prior to crews transporting patients to hospital.
“This also helps to reduce misinformation around issues like billing by providing specific answers and a dedicated webpage,” Rachel said.

Team members across the state contributed ideas and resources they believe are needed and helped to shape the eight-page pocket guide.
St John WA Wellbeing and Psychological Services Manager Janice Wong and her team of mental health professionals used their experience working with frontline clinicians to shape the mental health support information included, to help the WA public navigate the emotional impact of witnessing a traumatic event in their own time.
“Experiencing or witnessing an incident can leave individuals feeling confused, in shock, upset or agitated.
“This pocket guide provides guidance and support, including practical information on coping with grief and navigating the aftermath of a traumatic event,” said Janice
