New training pilot boosts trauma response capability in remote workplaces
- St John WA and Gold Fields partner on a pilot training program for high-risk industries.
- Critical Response Training (CRT) course builds practical trauma response skills using field-ready kits.
- Strong participant feedback with plans to expand across other sectors.
A new Critical Response Training (CRT) course developed by St John WA has been successfully piloted in partnership with leading gold producer Gold Fields, aiming to boost first-response capability for workers in high-risk and remote environments.
The program equips non-medical team members, such as security personnel and site supervisors, with practical trauma response skills using industry-grade specialised trauma kits.
Training covered bleeding control, airway support and oxygen therapy, and was delivered in both half-day and full-day formats at St John WA’s Bassendean Training Centre.
Designed and clinically reviewed by St John WA’s training and paramedicine leaders, the CRT course reflects real-world emergency scenarios relevant to WA’s critical industries.

“Some of the most effective interventions I’ve seen during my time in country ambulance services came from bystanders who acted early with basic skills,” Justin Fonte, Head of Growth & Innovation at St John WA, said.
“This course gives people that confidence—especially in locations where help can take time to arrive.”
Gold Fields supported the pilot as part of its continued investment in workforce safety and resilience, reflecting a shared commitment to proactive, hands-on risk management.
“The Critical Response Training course is a must for anyone working in safety-sensitive or remote environments,” Keith da Silva, Gold Fields Lead Specialist Safety and Health, said.
“The hands-on, scenario-based training was highly practical and engaging, significantly boosting both confidence and capability in responding to real-life emergencies.
“I would highly recommend this course to any organisation committed to safety, preparedness, and protecting its workforce—particularly those operating in remote or exploration settings.”
Following the successful pilot partnership, the CRT course now forms part of St John’s Advanced First Aid Training suite.
Suitable for similar industries, including farming, construction, and private security, CRT sessions are being held on a bi-monthly basis from 28 August – offering scalable, real-world training where and when it matters most.
