Mullewa Sub Centre celebrates 80 years of service to the community
The Mid West town of Mullewa is known for its wildflowers and heritage buildings.
It also has its very own St John WA sub centre and this year marks 80 years of service to the local community and surrounding areas.
An article in the Geraldton Guardian and Express from June 13, 1945 detailed the founding of the sub centre and ambulance service in the town.
After a meeting was held between locals and the ‘West Australian Centre of the St John Ambulance Association’, and instigating an immediate appeal for funds, the original ambulance for Mullewa was purchased for £750.

Locals eagerly stepped up to provide their support for the service, including one of the founding committee members, Horrace Peet.
Horrace’s son, and beloved long-time volunteer, John ‘Hobby’ Peet attended the anniversary celebrations at the sub centre last week.
40 volunteers and members of the community gathered to reminisce about the old times, share stories and reflect on the impact they’ve had in Mullewa.
Community Paramedic, Nic Chadbourne, was proud to coordinate the event alongside the current committee.
“It’s a beautiful time of year here in Mullewa with the wildflowers out,” he said.
“We had a big turnout for our afternoon tea and it was great to get together with volunteers, past and present.
“St John WA has a great history of providing vital support to the town and we’re proud to continue the legacy.”
Thank you to everyone who has been involved in the sub centre’s success over the past 80 years – here’s to 80 more.
