Meet a Busselton paramedic whose 30 of years service with St John is a lesson in kindness

Busselton paramedic Wayne Cranstoun may have traded his teacher’s classroom for ambulance lights and sirens, but he still has taught hundreds in his 30 years of service with St John WA.
Mr Cranstoun has been involved in the recruitment and training of more than 100 volunteers to the Busselton career sub station, and his supportive and kind approach has been credited with building ambulance officers’ confidence in delivering a high-quality, cost-effective country service.
Busselton is manned by more than 60 volunteers and their support to career paramedics is paramount to its successful 24-hour rotational roster.
Mr Cranstoun joined as Busselton’s inaugural station manager in 2006 and was integral to developing arguably of the best regarded career depots in the state, with strong clinical relationships with Busselton Hospital staff.
Prior to moving to Busselton, Mr Cranstoun’s stirling career for several years included being a paramedic trainer in the College of Pre-Hospital Care tasked with developing new Student Ambulance Officers (SAOs), as well as being a metropolitan station manager and team leader.
On Tuesday (September 20), St John WA recognised Mr Cranstoun and Albany paramedic Edwin McLean for 30 and 35 years of service, respectively, at its September Recognition ceremony. It was also Mr Cranstoun’s 65th birthday.
Pinjarra paramedic Christine Hunter will be awarded for 30 years service in October.
Ms Hunter, a former nurse, has also received many commendations for her care, compassion and kindness to patients.
She joined Pinjarra as station manager in 2008, where her vast knowledge in Emergency Management and Disaster Preparedness has helped build a highly-skilled and dedicated team of volunteers and paramedics in the Peel region.
