Central hub acts as a dynamic base for St John Ambulance

Press Release

St John Ambulance’s Central hub, which sits on an 18,000 square metre parcel of land tucked away at 5 Cowcher Place in Belmont, is home to a vast array of equipment, vehicles and operations.

The second of its kind in Perth to be built by St John, the Central hub is part of an anticipated series of hub facilities that will provide increased efficiencies to St John including in our Event Health Services (EHS), metro ambulance operations and patient transfer services departments. In addition, the Central hub provides us with abundant workshop space, replacing the previous site in Belmont which we had outgrown.

The hub is comprised of an 8,000 square metre warehouse which is home to the supply and distribution, EHS and fleet and radio departments.

St John EHS General Manager Phil Martin said the hub project is the first of its kind in Australia and is based on a ‘hub and spoke’ model.

“This project demonstrates St John’s willingness to be an innovative leader in the area of primary health care in the community, and will allow for the dynamic deployment of ambulances and free up space in a number of existing ambulance depots,” he said.

“The Central hub is unique in that it incorporates not only ambulance operations but also acts as a central location where we have a significant supply of equipment and vehicles and the capability to run as an emergency command post and staging area,” said Mr Martin.

“This is the site where all of our ambulances start their life – our 700-strong fleet come here to get fitted out and have radios installed and the end result is a state-of-the-art ambulance. Additionally, our metro fleet of 150 vehicles are serviced at this facility.

“The Central hub is also where our youth and community engagement and EHS volunteers are coordinated and deployed to provide first aid at events such as Skyworks, Anzac Day and the Royal Show.

“This facility will enable us to have increased flexibility in the utilisation of resources and will help make our service more responsive and able to meet the needs of the community.”
