Esperance volunteer hits 55 years of service to humanity

Billie Andrews ASM DStJ has been recognised for her 55 years of commitment to the health and wellbeing of the Esperance community.

It was the completion of a first aid course that inspired Billie to become a volunteer with St John WA back in 1971.

Since then, she has held numerous roles within the Esperance sub centre team including volunteer ambulance officer, first aid instructor and sub centre president – all while working her day job as a nurse for the local health service.

At the age of 81, Billie is still serving as a volunteer and nurse.

Billie was admitted as a Member to the Order of St John in 1985 and was eventually promoted to Dame, one of the highest honours in the Order, in 2003.

In 2002, she was awarded the prestigious Ambulance Service Medal (ASM).

To commemorate an incredible 55 years of volunteer service to the Esperance community, and a Department of Communities award during National Volunteer Week, Billie was honoured with a celebration led by St John WA Group CEO, Kevin Brown, and Chief Emergency Officer, Wil White, and General Manager Ambulance Operations – Rural and Remote, Karen Stewart.

“This was a moment of recognition for a woman who has quietly given so much of herself to others,” Wil said.

“At 81 years old, she even continues to work as a full-time nurse, a testament to her dedication and generous spirit.”

Billie’s commitment to developing people, empathetic patient care and improving local first aid knowledge will continue to leave a lasting legacy in Esperance.

Inspired by Billie? St John WA is always looking for new volunteers.
