Michael Eppen

Finalist nod for St John WA Health and Safety Representative

Press Release

St John WA’s Michael Eppen has been named a finalist in the 2025 Worksafe Work Health and Safety Excellence Awards for Health and Safety Representative (HSR) of the Year.

Michael is the Health and Safety Representative for St John WA’s busy Fleet and Radio Team.

His proactive approach has directly contributed to creating a safe environment for team members, contractors, and visitors – setting a new benchmark for health and safety.

Since taking up the role, Michael has quickly made exponential changes in the workplace with a focus on traffic management improvements across multiple sites.

His biggest achievement so far has been identifying and reducing safety risks at 5 Cowcher Place, Belmont – St John WA’s main hub and a busy spot for both vehicles and foot traffic.

This work has now reduced the risk of vehicle and pedestrian accidents, improving emergency vehicle access, and ensuring a clearer, safer flow of traffic.

Michael’s focus on leading a better safety culture has also been praised.

“As a Health and Safety Representative, Michael has served as a crucial link between team members and leaders, ensuring open communication and substantial collaboration on safety issues.

“His approach to consultation has encouraged greater team member involvement, leading to faster identification of hazards and stronger safety outcomes.

“Thanks to Michael’s guidance, health and safety is not just a compliance task, it is a shared priority embedded in the everyday culture of the organisation,” Katie Tran, St John WA Safety Advisor, said.

The winners will be announced on 28 October at Optus Stadium.
