Finding the words when seconds matter: English learning meets first aid at South Metro TAFE

Press Release
  • St John WA Youth and Community Engagement’s First Aid Awareness session brings vital first aid knowledge to the community.
  • Students at South Metro TAFE shared cultural dishes with volunteers before diving into live-saving CPR sessions.
  • Demystifying the ambulance experience for migrants.

Adult Migrant English Program students at South Metro TAFE paired language practise with life-saving skills through a free, tailored session delivered by St John WA’s Youth and Community Engagement First Aid Awareness team.

The session blended ambulance familiarisation with hands‑on first aid, helping participants build confidence in emergencies.

TAFE Lecturer Frankie Aldaiji wanted the session to break down the ambulance experience, allowing students to practise English in a supportive, hands-on environment while learning what to expect in an emergency.

“One student had experience with paramedics when he had to go in an ambulance a few years ago when his wife was giving birth,” Frankie said.

“He enjoyed practising his English skills again and seeing the progress he has made from that time to this time in a more relaxed setting.

“He was very appreciative of the experience.

“It was a really useful session for them.

“It means they won’t feel as daunted if they find themselves in an ambulance in the future.

“The students learned a lot and the volunteers were so kind and patient with them”.

The students also used the session to converse with volunteers about volunteering, their experiences, and building connections, practising their English skills while showing their culinary skills via a morning tea, highlighting their various cultures.

These YCE sessions provide accessible first aid introductions for people who may not have the financial capacity for full certification, creating an important pathway to building community first aid capability.

By meeting people where they are, classrooms, community organisations, and community hubs, St John WA reduces barriers to first aid education, builds trust with emergency services, and strengthens community resilience.

Participants gain practical skills, the confidence to act, and clearer communication with paramedics when it matters most.
