Future paramedics celebrate first year of study at Curtin University

Press Release

The inaugural cohort of paramedicine students from Curtin School of Nursing has completed their first year of study.

The Bachelor of Science (Paramedicine) course was launched by Curtin in 2025.

Fifty students who enrolled last year are now on their way to careers as a paramedic.

Increasingly, paramedics are serving in diverse healthcare settings, including in primary care, rural health and industrial health services.

Graduates are in demand across Australia and are highly regarded internationally.

Nationally, paramedic and ambulance officer roles are expected to grow by more than 20 per cent by 2034.¹

The Curtin School of Nursing course teaches students the fundamental skills of out-of-hospital emergency care, including evidence-based clinical best practice, emergency and crisis management, and effective communication.

Course coordinator and registered paramedic Michelle Young said Curtin introduced the course to prepare graduates for contemporary paramedicine and the changing needs of patients and services.

“Curtin’s paramedicine degree is designed to equip students with the knowledge, skills and professionalism to work as paramedics in Australia and international,” she said.

“Students develop core capabilities in out-of-hospital care, grounded in evidence-based practice, strong communication, emergency and crisis management, and sound clinical decision-making.

On graduation, students can be employed as paramedics across a variety of settings, including ambulance services and other expanding areas of paramedic practice.

St John WA congratulates these students, and wishes them every success in the future.
