It’s a girl! Triple Zero call-taker plays a part in surprise delivery

Press Release

Every now and then the Triple Zero call-takers at St John WA get to experience something so far out of the ordinary, the successful completion of such a call grants them membership into an exclusive club.

The Stork Club is for emergency dispatchers who help to deliver a baby over the phone.

If a bub is in a rush, and if paramedics have not yet arrived on scene, it’s up to the voice on the other end of the emergency line to stay calm and provide life-saving advice to ensure the safe arrival of the little bundle.

Call-takers can go their whole career without this happening to them, but St John’s Peta Davies got to enter the very special club with the safe delivery of a baby back in March.

The unexpected – and very fast – arrival of a little baby girl shocked a couple in Perth’s outer suburbs, prompting them to call Triple Zero.

Luckily, they got Peta on the line and, in a textbook delivery over the phone, the newborn came into the world perfectly.

“It was just the best feeling,” Peta said.

“I couldn’t get the smile off my face for the rest of the shift.

“To experience something like this among all the doom and gloom was really special.”

The new parents said they couldn’t thank Peta enough.

“She was absolutely perfect,” they said.

“We will never forget her, and the paramedics who arrived to help.

“Amazing, beautiful people.”

Peta is now back to dealing with the usual calls that come through, but she said she would never forget the role she played in bringing a bouncing baby girl into the world.

“It was so special,” she said. “It was just the best.”
