Vibrant artwork by Menang Gnudju Noongar artist Kiya Watt is set to transform training uniforms of St John WA staff across the Great Southern.

Featuring whales and turtles swimming in a sea of colour, Watt’s artwork is a celebration of the region she calls home.

The designs are set to feature on St John WA training uniforms to be worn by teams at sub centres across the Great Southern.

Watt said she was “honoured and excited” to create a design that captured the region.

“St John loved the yakkans (turtles) I do, and they’re very spiritual to my dreaming spirit, and so it worked perfectly,” she told the Albany Advertiser.

“Visually it all just came together really well and represented all of the Great Southern.”

SJWA Great Southern regional administration co-ordinator Andrea White said the artwork would unify sub centres across the region.

“It’s a sort of sense of our region as a whole because it’s beautiful,” she said.

“It’s all the different parts of our region and incorporates all of our sub-centres whether they’re up in Katanning or along the coastline.”

The initiative represents a local effort to implement the SJWA Reconciliation Action Plan, the organisation’s commitment to making positive contributions to the lives of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people across WA.
