Northam takes the prize for St John WA Sub Centre of the Year, 2023

Press Release

St John WA has awarded Northam its Sub Centre of the Year at the annual St John Experience recognition ceremony.

The awards recognise sub centres and individuals across Western Australia who go above and beyond to support the services St John WA delivers.

The Northam team has worked hard to build a loyal group of volunteers and achieved many prestigious community commendations.

This year, the local team successfully implemented a drug register pilot program and launched a career progression logbook for new volunteers while achieving roster fill rates of more than 90 per cent.

As well as covering their own patch, crews from Northam also regularly assist Goomalling, Wyalkatchem, and Toodyay with standby cover for community events, and have held successful training days for surrounding depots to increase the skill set of Avon volunteers.

Being part of the Northam community means responding to incidents at the immigration detention centre, as well as emergencies in town and on surrounding roads.

It also means a constant presence of crews at community events such as markets and swap meets, regular sporting fixtures, cycling competitions, the Avon Descent, motocross and horse trotting events.

Northam crews participate in ceremonial duties for Anzac Day, Police Remembrance Day, and Remembrance Day, solidifying their commitment to their town and region.

Their collaboration and engagement with the community – as well as other emergency services – has led to regular team-building activities which foster a tight-knit group dedicated to serving humanity in the Avon.

St John WA Group CEO Kevin Brown congratulated the Northam team for the invaluable work they do for their community.

“I am very proud of this dedicated group of people who continually go above and beyond in their service, and have built a strong and supportive team.”
