St John thanks volunteers during national volunteer week

- More than 8,640 everyday Western Australians volunteer their time to help St John Ambulance WA deliver lifesaving services to communities around the state;
- In 2015/16 St John grew its volunteer base by 65 per cent;
- St John volunteers make contributions across more than 160 regional and remote centres from the Great Southern to the Kimberly;
- 145 ambulance sub centres in country WA are run fully by volunteers with oversight and support from the state office;
- 15 country sub centres are staffed by a mix of volunteers and career paramedics;
- There is an increasing number of people who use volunteering with St John as a pathway to gaining skills to help them enter a healthcare career.
- Each year in WA, volunteer ambulance officers travel more than two million kilometres, providing services to more than 60,000 sick and injured people.
- St John’s volunteers make a significant contribution in many service areas, including Country Ambulance, Event Health, Community First Responder, First Aid Training and Community Transport;
- In 2015/16 St John launched several initiatives aimed at recruiting volunteers. These included the introduction of a Community Transport Volunteer Program offering people the opportunity to connect with St John, the establishment of new volunteer roles like Corporate Events Volunteers, First Aid Awareness Officers, Volunteer First Aid Assistants and Crew Members, and piloting Country Youth Ambulance Officers.
