St John to offer free service for vets this Anzac Day

Press Release

St John Ambulance WA is honouring ex-servicemen and women this Anzac Day by offering complimentary transport through various RSL branches to assist their members with transport to various commemorations around Perth.

St John Patient Transfer Services General Manager Alan Clyne said for the first time St John will be offering free travel on Anzac Day to veterans.

“Our Community Transport Volunteers will be taking veterans to marches and memorial services across Perth, which they otherwise might not have been able to attend,” he said.

“We think this is a very worthwhile exercise and to be able to give something back to these wonderful people continues our motto of ‘for the service of humanity’,” he said.

“Some of these people do have difficulty accessing transport so we just wanted to make their day a little easier.

“Better yet we have a small a number of veterans who volunteer for our St John Community Transport Service and a few of these will donating their time on Anzac Day to assist with the transports.”

One of these veterans is Anthea Reddings who served for 4 years in the Royal Australian Navy.

She said: “I understand the significance and importance that veterans have provided in the past and continue to do so, I am honoured to be part of a team that allows more people to attend these special events in honour of their service.”

St John Community Transport Service provides a vital transportation service to help meet the everyday needs of the people we service within the West Australian community. The non-profit passenger service providing professional drivers and companions to escort people to and from appointments.

Mr Clyne said the free Anzac Day service extended St John‘s lengthy association with Anzac Day where teams of event health officers have looked after the health of veterans and the large public crowds that gather at services such as the Kings Park Dawn Service and the Anzac Parade through Perth CBD.

St John will deploy more than 150 officers across various metropolitan locations from Joondalup to Mandurah. 35 personnel will be in attendance for the Kings Park for the Dawn Service and a further 50 for the Anzac Parade.
