St John WA a big winner at the 2024 Work Health and Safety Excellence Awards

Press Release

St John WA is celebrating after winning one of the major categories at the Work Health and Safety Excellence Awards ceremony held at Optus Stadium on October 31.

The awards recognise outstanding solutions and innovations to specific workplace health and safety problems in Western Australia.

SJWA won Best solution to a work health and safety risk – 200 employees or more for its Stryker Power PRO stretcher rollout.

This category recognises innovation, implementation and/or design of systems or procedures to improve health and safety.

St John have rolled out the Stryker Power Pro stretcher allowing paramedics to raise, lower and unload patients using a touch finger control rather than a manual lift, reducing the risk of injuries to staff and improving comfort for patients.

The introduction of the Stryker stretcher has decreased stretcher-related injuries by more than 77 per cent in three years.

“This has been a concerted effort among a range of teams to get this rolled out,” SJWA Group CEO Kevin Brown said.

“It’s a great result.”

Also acknowledged at the awards was St John WA Health and Safety representative Tiq Rehman, who was a finalist.

As an HSR, Tiq Rehman is an active participant in St John’s ‘Road to Better Safety’ initiative where safety issues from around the organisation are discussed in a free and open forum.

Tiq also sits on St John WA’s violence and aggression and fatigue sub committees, which provide strategic leadership in the prevention, intervention and management of occupational violence and aggression and fatigue.

This year, a record 89 submissions were received with 41 companies/individuals recognised as finalists.

Nine of these finalists were awarded with a winner’s trophy and three finalists received a certificate of merit.

An outline of all finalists is available in the Work Health and Safety Excellence Awards 2024 booklet.

The department congratulated the winners, those that received certificates of merit, and all finalists.
