St John WA is proud to support AdventureSmart WA’s Safety September campaign – a united push to keep Western Australians safer when enjoying the great outdoors.
From rugged peaks to remote beaches, the campaign reminds all adventurers that being prepared can be lifesaving.
AdventureSmart WA is a collaboration across state government, emergency services, and community Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions (DBCA), the Department of Fire and Emergency Services (DFES).
St John WA recommends following the AdventureSmart three-step response to preparing for the outdoors: Plan it. Pack it. Do it.
- Plan it: Download the First Responder App. Refresh your first aid skills. Register as a First Responder.
- Pack it: Take a fit-for-purpose First Aid Kit tailored to your trip. Don’t forget your EPIRB, App, and enough water for everyone.
- Do it: When you’re out on an adventure, have the tools and knowledge to help out in an emergency.
In FY25, ambulance crews transported more than 2,300 patients to hospital after an allergic reaction, and more than 200 patients due to bites and stings across the state. Add to that the countless sprains, fractures, and serious cardiac incidents that can occur in remote locations, and it’s clear why preparation matters.
“There’s no substitute for preparation,” said Deane Coxall from St John’s Special Operations team.
“Safety starts with a plan, and the right equipment could mean the difference between a day out and a full-scale rescue.”
“The best rescue is the one that doesn’t need to happen.”
