St John WA trains all students at Kalamunda Primary School to strengthen community

• Kalamunda Primary School has taken part in St John WA’s First Aid Focus program as an entire school,
• All 370 students from Kalamunda Primary School, aged kindergarten through to year six, have been trained through St John WA’s free in-school program,
• About one Western Australian child calls Triple Zero (000) each month, meaning this training milestone is a step in the right direction towards achieving St John WA’s mission to provide training for every child in Western Australia, every year, by 2025. 

All 370 students at Kalamunda Primary School are now first aid-trained after taking part in St John WA’s First Aid Focus program.

St John WA’s First Aid Focus program has been developed to train and educate children with the skills to assess and respond respectively in the event of health emergency. The program is part of St John WA’s commitment to building a strong and resilient Western Australia and supported by St John Giving.

Kalamunda Primary School is the second school this year where all students and undertaken training, joining Meadow Springs Primary School who took part in the First Aid Focus program last month.

The training delivered to Kalamunda Primary School students, aged kindergarten through to year six, focused on the DRSABC first aid procedure – Danger, Response, Send for help, Airway, Breathing and Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).  In addition, St John WA provided training on responding to a snake bite and anaphylaxis at the school assembly.

About one Western Australian child calls Triple Zero (000) for their parent or carer each month, meaning the educational program can be the difference between life and death. Having the program rolled out across the entire school is part of St John WA’s mission to build and future-proof healthcare resilience across local communities.

Kalamunda Primary School Principal, Lee Bates said having the ability to provide personalised first aid training to the entire school has been an invaluable opportunity.

“St John WA’s First Aid Focus program has been vital in educating our students on these important life skills. We are passionate about equipping our students with the skills they need to potentially save a life in an emergency situation,” Mr Bates said.

“We are incredibly grateful to be one of the first schools in WA to train our entire cohort in first aid and to play a part in helping St John WA achieve its mission.”

St John WA CEO, Michelle Fyfe said it had been a fantastic year for the First Aid Focus program and she was looking forward to the continued expansion of the program at primary schools across the state.

“St John WA has trained more than 500,000 young people in through First Aid Focus over the past five years, working to future-proof healthcare resilience across our communities,” Ms Fyfe said.
