Friends and Commandery catch-up
St John WA welcomed Friends of St John and members of the Commandery for a morning tea focused on connection, conversation and the organisation’s future.
Held on 29 September 2026, the gathering was one of four engagement opportunities being offered to Friends and Commandery members throughout the year. Previously, there was one annual opportunity for Friends of St John to come together; the expanded program provides more regular opportunities to reconnect, share experiences and learn about current areas of St John WA’s work.

Following feedback from attendees at the previous gathering, the Youth First Aid Academy was featured at this session. Guests heard about the Academy’s growth from six initial divisions to 10 divisions, and the opportunities it provides for young people to develop first aid, leadership and communication skills.
The Academy combines practical first aid training with proficiency badges, leadership development and pathways into further study and health-related careers. It also encourages young people to continue their connection with St John as volunteers after completing school.
The discussion explored the importance of building the program sustainably, including ensuring each division has the volunteer capacity, funding and resources needed to provide a safe and engaging experience for students. Attendees also heard about the Academy’s growing links with the Order and Commandery, including the Priory Esquire pathway for young members.
A question-and-answer session provided an opportunity for Friends and Commandery members to share their own experiences, ask questions and reflect on the role youth programs have played in connecting generations of St John people.
The next engagement session will be held in the lead-up to Christmas, with the date and time to be confirmed. Invitations and further updates will be shared through the monthly newsletter.
The morning tea was a valuable reminder of the enduring connection between St John’s history, its people and its future.
